Pentacle is offering three artists free membership to its Administrative Support Program (ASP) and free access to Financial Urgent Care (FUC). Through this bundled offering, Pentacle aims to help the recipients adapt healthy business practices and build a strong infrastructure in order to promote artistic sustainability. 

Please note that Pentacle will be prioritizing applicants who identify as artists of color, LGBTQIA+ artists, artists who are immigrants, and/or artists with disabilities. Pentacle is centering these communities due to a history of limited access to services such as these and because of the overall historically disparate impact on these groups’ abilities to practice their art forms in the United States.


DESCRIPTION OF OFFERING

Three performance-based individual artists or artistic entities will receive free membership to two Pentacle programs: Administrative Support Program (ASP) and Financial Urgent Care program (FUC).

  • Pentacle’s Administrative Support Program provides direct administrative services for artists looking to build more sustainable organizational operations under the guidance of Pentacle and alongside a cohort of artists with similar goals. Through ASP, artists have the opportunity to pick and choose from nine service offerings, bundling them together to use $1250 worth of services over the course of one year.
  • Pentacle’s Financial Urgent Care program provides artistic entities with a financial assessment, diagnosis, and customized treatment plan outlining the next steps to building a strong financial structure. Through FUC, artists are paired with a Pentacle staff member to complete the assessment and provide an additional 5 hours of hands-on assistance.


ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

Applicants should ensure that each of the below requirements are met before beginning the application:

  1. You are an individual performing artist, a performing arts company, and/or an arts service organization that serves performing artists.
  2. You are based in one of NYC’s 5 boroughs.
  3. Your budget size is no greater than $250,000.
  4. You would specifically benefit from and be able to successfully utilize the services offered in Pentacle’s Administrative Support Program and Financial Urgent Care.
  5. You have identified a need to focus on the financial and administrative side of your artistic entity, and are ready to take on the work that comes with this type of business development.


SELECTION CRITERIA

Applications will be reviewed by a team of panelists composed of mentors, Pentacle board members, and Pentacle staff. The panel will be ranking applicants according to:

  1. Need for the Services Offered: Applicant’s needs align with the services provided in ASP and FUC.
  2. Focus on Infrastructure Support: Applicant shows a commitment to establishing a strong business infrastructure for their artistic practice.
  3. Clear Goal Setting: Applicant has thoughtfully set clear goals to use the ASP and FUC.
  4. Equity: Applicant practices Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, and Inclusion within their business and/or performance practice.


TIMELINE

May 18, 2022 - Application becomes available.
June 15, 2022 - Application closes at 11:59pm ET.
June 2022 - Panelists review applications.
July 1, 2022 - All applicants will be notified of acceptance or nonacceptance by this date. The three awardees will choose a date to begin their 1-year ASP contract, which may be anytime within 6 months of acceptance. The 5 hours of FUC are scheduled according to each awardee’s need and as per Pentacle's suggestion.

FOCUS ON PERFORMING ARTISTS
"Which type of artistic entity are you applying as?" — This question is meant to serve the purpose of ensuring all applicants work in the performing arts.
To be eligible for these free services, you must be a performing artist or part of an organization that supports performing artists, rather than one who practices in or supports artists in genres such as the visual arts or writing/language arts. Since 1976, Pentacle’s mission has been to design and provide unique and robust programs for performing artists at critical stages in their careers, and Pentacle’s expertise is in enabling performing artists to focus on what they do best—create art and engage with audiences. As such, Pentacle will be providing services to specifically performing artists, as this is the artistic demographic who the organization is best equipped to serve. 

LOCATION REQUIREMENTS
"In what NYC borough is your primary business location?" — This question is meant to serve the purpose of ensuring all applicants conduct their primary activities and have a business address in one of NYC's five boroughs.
If your artistic entity conducts most of its performance activities or has a business address outside of this region, then unfortunately you are not eligible. Additionally, as required by Pentacle’s funders, artists served in these programs must be located in one of NYC’s five boroughs.

BUDGET LIMITATIONS
"Does your current fiscal year's projected budget exceed $250,000?" — This question is meant to serve the purpose of ensuring all applicants identify as small budget artists, under $250,000, looking for the specific type of infrastructure support that ASP and FUC are designed for.
The mission of ASP and FUC is to assist artists who are still growing and developing their infrastructure and administrative operations, rather than entities that are already well established. Most often, entities with annual budgets that surpass $250,000 have direct access to the personnel and business development that ASP and FUC provide.

"Do you believe that the services offered through ASP and FUC will greatly benefit your artistic endeavors?" — This question is meant to serve the purpose of ensuring all applicants have spent time reviewing ASP and FUC, and believe these services would greatly benefit their business development.
Pentacle wants to confirm that the specific services offered through ASP and FUC will be well utilized and prove helpful in the current stage of the three awardees' growth. The needs of applicants should match the services provided, and this will be a primary consideration in the selection process.

Long-Form Answering Preferences

Pentacle is offering applicants the option to submit answers to long-form questions using verbal communication/voice recordings, rather than in written/paragraph form. For these seven questions, answers will be collected via file uploads. Pentacle suggests using an app such as Voice Memo to record the answer to each applicable question (each answer will be a separate file and uploaded specifically to the corresponding question). Panelists will be provided the voice recordings when considering applications, and submissions will not be transcribed or provided by text. Pentacle and the reviewing panelists hold no preference for either answering method, and applicants are invited to choose the option they feel most comfortable with.
